April WWWD

Let's discuss. First off, the location will be in Lawrence at the Solidarity Center. More details on that will be forthcoming. Second, who's going to play? We will play three hours, so I don't think we should have more than nine performer slots. I think we need to go with the three songs each then one together, which I think is a good format. And "This Land" at the end. I'll bring the words this time.

Discuss.

A Question about Process

Is the whole event a fundraiser? I don't know anything about the people we're fundraising for -- although as I read the website, something's ringing a bell. I just heard about this element of the April 28 gig and haven't had time to research it, so I don't know whether or not I support them. I very well may.
However, as a matter of process, I don't think it works to just announce that, "Oh by the way, you're performing as part of a fundraiser for someone/a cause you've never heard of," with no discussion a priori. While I might enthusiastically support the cause, I don't support the process. And, given that the stakes are high, process will matter a great deal in the coming months and years. It's how civility is maintained and how we stay connected to each other rather than having the center not hold and go flying off into fragments as we did a few decades back. Which some of us long-in-the-tooth gray-hairs remember too well.
I would feel more comfortable if whoever is doing the fundraising made an announcement in their set and passed the hat or pointed out a donation jar at that time, rather than making it a charge at the door, which turns WWWD into an event for this specific cause. In which case, the WWWD musicians need to have been informed and signed off on it beforehand. After I've had a chance to inform myself and sort myself out about the Greenscare issue, I would be more than willing to have a conversation about performing in a fundraiser specific to that cause. Make sense? --kc

Process

Sorry that you feel that way KC. The discussion was held over two weeks ago. It was mentioned on email, but was mostly discussed here in this forum. You can read it below in this discussion thread. Now, that's the downside of discussion in the forum, people have to come to the web site and read it rather than just reading their email. There's a trade off there between too much mail, and to little mail. Perhaps something like this could have had more email.

I'm thinking the fundraising needs to be limited to a DFHA general fund, or a WWWD specific fund, instead of raising funds for the cause du jour. In this case, the cause had already booked the room, and we are inserting ourselves into the use of the room. We need better planning in the future. I will endeavor to get rooms lined up for the rest of the year. I still need to fill July, August, and October.

Thanks ...

I agree that the fundraising needs to be specific to WWWD or DFHA. If we individually want to branch out to other causes and peeps, we are all free agents and should do that. If we as a group want to support a particular cause, we should huddle and reach consensus on that. But generally, I'd say let's keep our focus on WWWD and DFHA.

I really hadn't gotten into the habit of checking this forum. I have a stoopidly busy life these days and among the multiple items in the triage, this hadn't made it to the top of the screen. I am now aware that I need to check in regularly and see what's shakin'. I've been out of town, dealing with my mother's final days, so that's been fairly consuming on an emotional level as well. AND, now that I've been out of touch with my computer for a few days, I have over 1,000 unread items in my three combined emails. I want to move to Machu Pichu and eat mangos with the monkeys.

I wonder if, in the future, a quick e-alert could be sent out if there's an issue like this being discussed, just to say, "Hey, we're talking about XX over on the Forums. Pop in and check it out..."

There's nothing wrong here, just human beans being human and learning how to have a workable organization with each other, si?

AND I repeat that I don't want you to feel bad about any part of this. You're doing an amazing job and I respect what you're working to accomplish. If any of this stuff were easy, the world wouldn't look the way it does right now.

I do know absolutely that I want my energies to be devoted to peaceful ways and peaceful people. I've been through the wounding of anarchy and violence and I refuse to offer one pffffzzzttt of my personal energy to that particular paradigm -- ever.

Onward -- with lovingkindness!

Who Plays With Who (Whom) for What Would Woody Do
I'd like to play with Matt and Jim Abel, but I'd be comfortable with any set except the Hip Hop. I'm flexible.

OK. Works for me. I was thinking we could start out with Checkered Past this time. That way we'll get them all set up with all their instruments at the beginning, and the rest of us set up more quickly. So, what do you think about this line up?

Checkered Past

Jim Herrmann
Joe & Spence
Basin

Jim Abel
Matt Powell
David Hakan

april 28 sets

looks like a good lineup. Starting with Checkered Past makes sense, too, for logistics. Matt, David, let's think about a group song.

Who's playing?

So I count a full slate of six

Checkered Past
Jim Herrmann
Jim Abel
David Hakan
Matt Powell
Basin
Joe Carr w/ DJ Spence

That's three hours with nine or ten performers. Sets of three, with three songs apiece, and one together, and we all do "This Land" together at the end. Now who wants to play with who?

WWWD April Info

The person we have booked from lawrence is Basin: www.myspace.com/basin

The benefit will go to Eric McDavid and Briana Waters, here's a blurb about them:

A benefit for Eric McDavid and Briana Waters, the two remaining defendents from a series of arrests of environmentalists being called "The Green Scare". Both McDavid and Waters face prison sentences for refusing to cooperate with the authorities in these cases. For more info, please visit www.greenscare.org

We'll be taking donations at the door, $3-5 sliding scale,
no one turned away for lack of cash... and probably also selling vegan baked goods and coffee on site to raise funds (by donation as well)

Can you work that into the flyer Jim? You could edit down for sure if you want.

green scare cases

Joe, thanks for working on this.

Since this will be in part a fundraiser for Eric McDavid and Briana Waters, I want to ask you a question that has been on my mind whenever I thought about these cases. Perhaps you know, perhaps not. Do McDavid and Waters deny involvement in the physical acts[arson and other destruction of property] and the conspiracy or is their defense based on some other claim? The web references I have found are not clear, at least not for McDavid. Waters is said to believe in non-violence, but I have not seen a specific denial of the charges. Some of their co-defendants have pleaded guilty to some of the charges and I am just trying to piece it all together.

Normally I would post this to you privately, but I thought some of the others might share my interest.

Thanks.

Green Scare details

Just for the record, so we can all feel okay about supporting these cases, Briana Waters and Eric McDavid maintain they are innocent and had nothing to do with these actions. I understand why there is concern over this, and while I believe we should support them, even if they did take part in these actions, they maintain they are innocent, and are facing a lot of time in prison for not copping a plea.

Secondly, Eric's case is really mirky because he was set up by an informant for the police and FBI that concocted the while supposed scheme, and basically entrapped the three Auburn defendents. This situation is especially dangerous, because this is a case where a proved agent of the state created a plot, found people who would supposedly carry it out, bought the materials, and then dropped whatever blame on the feet of those they supposedly duped who might have carried out the actions. Keep in mind, Eric did nothing... he is being accused of being involved in a plot to do something that was prevented from happening... a plot developed fully by an agent of the state.

We need to stand with these defendents, and this is a plea to do so. Briana and Eric are guilty of nothing but loving the Earth and humanity, and fighting for freedom... we must stand with them, lest we hang without them.

Thanks so much!

Repression & solidarity

Of the twelve activists from across the country originally arrested, one was found dead in his cell and nine others were threatened and manipulated so much that they've plea bargined, turned state's witness, and are testifying against eachother. Eric and Briana are the two holding out against the state, and mounting a defense that we won't really know much about until the trial. They are pleading not guilty, but we'll never really know what they did or didn't do based on how they plea.

We're supporting them because they are corageous envrionmental activists who are facing severe state repression, and refusing to be intimidated into ratting out others. Most tactics used today by the radical earth defense movement would generally be considered nonviolent. But for some of us, the line is very blurry when it comes to property destruction, esp when the property is meant to create horendous violence.

But regardless of any disagreements over tactics, the state is prosecuting our comrades in order to send a message to all of us. We have to build a culture of support for other activists facing repression, you never know when you might need it.

You can get more info on their case at http://greenscare.org/

We're set for Lawrence!

We’re totally set for WWWD at Solidarity on April 28th. It’s called:
The Solidarity Radical Library and Revolutionary Center, its at 1109 Massachusetts in Downtown Lawrence, KS. It’ll be a fundraiser (by donation) for the two remaining defendants in the Green Scare case, I’ll send you their names and info later today. I’ll also send you the info of the one performer who we already have booked, they’re fine to play along with us in our format. DJ Spence and I are down to play as well. Should we go for another hip-hop set? I could easily get two others, either in Lawrence or KC. Just lemme know. Once we get the lineup down we can bottom line advertising in Lawrence and putting it on all our local websites and stuff.
I’ll get you that other info asap.
Thanks

April 28th, count me in

Please add me to the list. I'm happy to do only one song if that's all time allows. I'd also like to see a larger group join me on Woody's song Peace Call. I think it'd sound good with more instruments, especially bass and mandolin. Anyone from Checkered past want to help out?

Count me in, with new music.

WWWD Appreciation

I can't sing and I can't dance like I used to, but I appreciate the people who do. And I love progressive politics! Thank you for the great shows!
